The Chinese company that ran the overly racist ad showing a black person being stuffed into a washing machine and emerging clean as a Chinese, has apologised for the furore the ad has caused.
The ad, which we roundly condemned as the ‘most racist, absurd and offensive tv commercial’ ever aired, has brought a ton of bad publicity for the firm, who claim the entire thing has been blown out of proportion by the foreign media.
In the statement released Saturday, Shanghai Leishang Cosmetics Ltd Co apologised to ‘the African people’, although not for the offensive message in the ad, but for its spread and apparently for being misinterpreted.
“We express our apology for the harm caused to the African people because of the spread of the ad and the over-amplification by the media.
“We sincerely hope the public and the media will not over-read it. We express regret that the ad has caused a controversy , but we will not shun responsibility for controversial content.
This non-apology apology displays all the tone deafness of the original offending material. The problem is over-amplification, as if everyone had shut their mouths, then there would be no controversy to talk about.
The company sees nothing wrong with the ad beyond the existence of a controversy causing them bad PR. That’s all they’re really worried about.
