The Inspector General of Police, COP John Kudalor, has doubled down on the idea of potentially shutting down social media on Election Day, saying there is nothing anyone can do to stop them.
John Kudalor, speaking on Class Fm Friday, said that whilst everyone is entitled to their own opinion, the service would do what they feel is in the best interest of the country, and that’s final.
“I don’t want to use some words, I think everybody has his opinion, everybody is entitled to his opinion.” He began. “[But] I’m talking as a security person, and I know where I’m coming from and I know what has happened.
“The world is now a global village and we have to compare with best practices, so, I don’t see what they are talking about.
“If it gets to the crunch… I think there is nothing that can stop anybody from going that way if it’s necessary,”
The IGP had proposed the frankly absurd idea at a media briefing during the week, and instead of realising the sheer futility and ludicrousness embedded in it after issues were raised, he seems to be doubling down on his position. He cited examples such as Uganda during the presser, and frankly, if his idea of being the IGP is to get us to the kangaroo democracy that is Uganda, then he needs to resign his post.
This is from our report on Uganda’s February elections…
“[Opposition leader] Besigye spent election night under house arrest, and immediately described the results as fraudulent, with government intimidation and vote rigging. In a statement, he said: “We have just witnessed what must be the most fraudulent electoral process in Uganda,”
“The EU Observer mission agreed with Besigye’s concerns, according to the BBC.
“The election has been marred by sporadic violence and opposition allegations of electoral fraud, with social media sites and messaging apps blocked.” the site noted.
Now I guess that’s the kind of democracy John Kudalor wants for Ghana.
Also, when this clueless man talks about ‘international best practices’, I assume he’s referring to some of the world’s best democracies, like the US or Britain or Scandinavian countries shutting down social media on election day. No? So he’s just pulling that phrase out of his a**?
It’s astonishing that a man with such a mindset has risen to the highest police office in a supposedly ‘democratic’ nation like ours. He displays zero understanding of the foundational elements of a democracy, and seeing as how he is a very recent Mahama appointee, the government should give their stance on this issue, else we reach for the reasonable conclusion that this kind of kangaroo democracy Kudalor wants us to become is exactly what they want.
