Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom Promises To Get Rid Of AU Day As President- ‘We Do Not Need An African Day Holiday’

Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom

Flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, has promised to get rid of the AU holiday if he is elected President.
The 25th of May every year is African Union day, set aside to commemorate the founding of the African regional body, which replaced the Organisation of African Unity in 2001.
The day is a statutory holiday in Ghana, one of many littered throughout the year, and Dr Nduom thinks there is no need to add that to the long list of holidays which in some ways stifle productivity.
In a post on Facebook Wednesday, the businessman and three time candidate for President said that celebrating holidays after holidays stifle productivity and rather leave African nations behind. He said that celebrating those who fought for Africa’s freedom is a laudable goal, but the means through which it’s done is not the best.
He promised to abolish the celebration if he ever became President.
He wrote:

WE DO NOT NEED AN AFRICA DAY HOLIDAY – LETS GET RID OF IT.
Another holiday, to celebrate Africa Day? Why?
I am for commemorating this day to remember those who fought for our liberation and independence and to think through what we must do to guarantee African people a high quality of life.
But we need to WORK for stronger institutions, good economies across the continent and prosperity for our people. These will not be achieved through holiday upon holiday. We lose productivity and reduce the opportunity to become competitive nations this way.
Let’s get rid of it. This will be on my hit list as the President of the Republic of Ghana.”

Whilst one leader calls for its abolishment, President Mahama sent out a celebratory tweet on the day earlier Wednesday.
“Afica is rising, there is no question about that. Happy AU Day.” The President wrote on his official twitter handle.
What do you make of Dr Nduom’s proposal?
