The final game of the season for English giants Manchester United had to be called off Sunday, after police discovered a suspicious package ahead of their home game with Bournemouth.
Police were forced to evacuate the Sir Alex Ferguson and Stretford End stands after discovery of the package at Old Trafford. The game was initially supposed to be delayed, but was later called off as a security measure.
“Due to the discovery of a suspect package in the north-west quadrant of the ground, the match has been abandoned for today on police advice.” The club said in a statement shortly after.
Manchester United are fighting for fourth place in the league, and consequently a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League- and the delay means the issue might be out of their hands when they next play, with city rivals Manchester City needing just a draw away to Swansea to clinch the spot.
It’s not yet clear when the game would be replayed.
