Florida man George Zimmerman, who shot and killed African America teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012 and escaped conviction, is auctioning off the murder weapon.
Zimmerman has placed the gun up for online auction, with bidding set to start at $5,000. He says proceeds from the gun are to be used to fight Hilary Clinton’s anti-firearm rhetoric and to end the violence against officers fuelled by the Black Lives Matter Movement.
Black Lives Matter was formed after Zimmerman gunned down an unarmed Martin, claiming the boy assaulted him and reached for his gun. He was not arrested for weeks after the killing, and after a protracted trial, was acquitted.
He only recently received the gun back from the US Justice Department.
“I am honoured and humbled to announce the sale of an American Firearm Icon. The firearm for sale is the firearm that was used to defend my life and end the brutal attack from Trayvon Martin on 2/26/2102” Zimmerman wrote on the website.
Bidding starts at 1500 GMT today (Thursday).
