The Labour Party’s Sadiq Khan comfortably saw off his Conservative opponent Tory Zac Goldsmith in a landslide 57%-43% victory.
Khan’s victory makes him the first ever Muslim mayor of the UK’s capital, and the first elected Muslim to head a major European city.
Khan’s election comes at a time where Muslim immigration is a huge issue in much of Europe, following the carnage ISIS is causing in the Levant. The Conservatives run on the platform that Khan could not keep the city safe, but London voters repudiated the tactic, giving Khan the edge 1, 310,143 to 994,614 in votes.
Labour leader Jereny Corbyn, a similarly beleaguered politician, tweeted his congratulations to the new mayor. He wrote on twitter: “Can’t wait to work with you to create a London that is fair for all #YesWeKhan”.
Khan becomes the third mayor of London, replacing Conservative leader Boris Johnson.
