The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, has been conferred with an honorary degree (Doctor of Laws).
The honour was bestowed on the 72 year old by the University of Fort Hare, South Africa, in a ceremony held earlier today (Thursday).
Nana Akuffo-Addo, a lawyer himself, is three time flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, a former Attorney General and Foreign Affairs Minister during the administration of former President Kuffour. The University decided to honour him because, as they put it, his “legal and political leadership roles, both past and present, significantly contribute to human rights, constitutional democracy as well as socio-economic development as enshrined in the University of Fort Hare’s strategic vision and mission.”
The University of Fort Hare, in East London, is one of the most prestigious schools on the continent. Alumni include political stalwarts Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Tanzania’s first President Julius Nyerere.
