The National Peace Council has issued a statement denying it issued any condemnation of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for making comments perceived to be dividing people along religious lines.
The Council condemned the attempts to use their reputation as a pawn in a political game being played by others.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had drawn condemnation for comments he passed speaking to some NPP supporters in the Upper West region, deemed to be of a divisive nature akin to the tribal ones made by Dzifa Attivor some days prior.
“We are in this country living peacefully and nicely; Christians and Muslims. So we believe in the NPP that Christians and Muslims should work together and that is why whenever we pick a flagbearer as a Christian, we pick a Muslim as a vice.
“And when we come and pick a Muslim as a flagbearer, we will pick a Christian as a vice. So if, Insha Allah, Nana Akufo-Addo becomes president, he will swear with the Bible and enter the Flagstaff and I will swear with the Quran and enter the flagstaff House.”
A statement making rounds on social media intimated that the Peace Council had condemned his comments, but they have come out to deny that statement.
Below is their statement denying the initial statement attributed to them.
DISCLAIMER! DISCLAIMER!! DISCLAIMER!!!
The attention of the National Peace Council has been drawn to a statement circulating on the social media with a caption “THE NATIONAL PEACE COUNCIL CONDEMNS DR. BAWUMIA ON POTENTIALLY RELIGIOUS INFLAMMATORY COMMENT”.
We are very surprise some people want to play with the integrity and the credibility of the National Peace Council because of their political interest.
This statement going rounds on the social media which says Prof. Emmanuel Asante has signed on behalf of the National Peace council is false and fabricated. The National Peace council is not hypocrite to make such a release because of pressure from some political parties.
We are yet to read what Dr. Bawumia said and confirm before we can agree whether to come out with a statement about it either than that, we in the National peace council entreat the general public to treat the said release with the contempt it deserves.
Thank you
SIGNED
…………….
REV. PROF. EMMANUEL ASANTE
CHAIRMAN, NATIONAL PEACE COUNCIL
