The New Patriotic Party candidate for the Abuakwa North by-election, Gifty Twum Ampofo, has easily seen off her competitors to be elected as the MP-elect for the Abuakwa North constituency.
Ampofo secured 10,033 votes representing 89.60% of the total votes cast, to beat the Ghana Freedom Party’s Samuel Frimpong and Isaac Kwartey’s of the United People’s Party.
The by-election became necessary following the murder of the constituency’s erstwhile MP, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, who was stabbed to death at his home in Shiashie in Accra.
Unknown assailants breached his residence at dawn on February 9, and repeatedly stabbed him to death. One suspect has been arrested so far and is on trial.
The NDC did not field a candidate for the by-election, but would field one in November when the seat goes back into play during the parliamentary and presidential elections.
