Ghanaians were shocked when news broke early Sunday that former NPP Chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, had passed away after falling ill.
The news has thrown a lot of people off guard, and tributes has been pouring in for the NPP stalwart.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings has released a statement on Jake’s demise, extending condolences to his family during this difficult period.
“We have learnt of the sad demise of Mr Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, former Chairman of the New Patriotic Party and leading figure in the advertising and marketing industry.” The statement read.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to his family. May God give you comfort and peace at this difficult moment and may the soul of your beloved Jake rest in peace.”
President John Dramani Mahama, as is customary for him, commented on the sad news on twitter. He expressed his condolences, whilst noting the number of public figures who have met their demise this month.
Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, born 4 February 1946, died in London on March 20, 2016. His long political career saw him serving as Minister of Tourism and Diasporan Relations in the cabinet of President John Kufuor, as well as Minister of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital (2002–05) and Minister of Information (2001–02).
He was also the National Campaign Manager of the victorious New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2000 Presidential elections, which saw the first constitutional (civilian-to-civilian) transition of power in Ghana.
