The Appeals Court on Thursday dismissed an appeal from the Attorney General’s Department seeking to overturn a High Court Ruling clearing Alfred Woyome of any criminal charges in the infamous judgement debt saga.
The Higher Court via an unanimous decision, upheld the High Court’s ruling that cleared Woyome of the criminal charges brought against him by the state.
This case is separate from the one by the Supreme Court, who ordered the businessman to pay back the Ghc 51.2m involved illegally paid to him by the NDC government. The criminal case spawned off the judgement debt issue, but the state failed woefully to prove a criminal case against Woyome in the High Court.
Justice Ajet Nassam (yes, that one) acquitted Woyome in March last year, leading to this appeal by the Attorney General. However, the Appeals Court agreed that the Attorney General failed to prove her case.
Often in high profile cases in Ghana, the defendants get to go scot free due to ineptitude by state prosecutors. It’s one of incompetence or indifference- possibly both.
