When you hear of Van Damme, action comes to mind; but comedy, not so much.
But in his twilight years the highly successful and popular action movie star is taking a gander at television comedy, slated to star in a comedy pilot under development by Amazon.
‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson’ is the title, sort of based on the 55 year old Belgian actor. Van Johnson is a famous actor and martial arts expert who is a retired secret agent, and gets sucked back into that world at the point the series commences.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the premise as thus:
Jean-Claude Van Johnson will star Van Damme as a version of himself — a famous actor and martial-arts pro who comes out of retirement to resume his alter-ego: an undercover private contractor by the name of Jean-Claude Van Johnson.
The comedy-action thriller will see Johnson’s cover as the lead role in a reimagined action film version of Huckleberry Finn that lands him back in the midst of the danger he secretly always craves. It also brings him back in the orbit of Vanessa, his fellow operative and the love of his life that got away.
David Callaham, whose previous work includes ‘The Expendables’ and ‘Godzilla’, is penning the pilot. Executive producers are Callaham and Ridley Scott, whilst Peter Atencio would direct.
