Doing stupid things in the name of religion is nothing new- just watch this video of people losing their minds after ‘angels’ supposedly entered their church, or consider how people freely give away their money to Obinim and his ilk all the time.
In India, a woman came close to death after she decided to follow everyone in perpetuating the killing of brain cells that religion engenders. Whilst participating in a Hindu ritual of walking across burning coals, she fell inside and only survived by the intervention of the authorities nearby.
Amazingly, you can see in the video that despite the commotion caused by the ladies’ fall, others continue to cross unperturbed. What else can cause otherwise sane individuals to go down this insane path, if not the scourge of organised religion, and the false sense of security it grants.
Firewalking has apparently been common practice in several cultures in the world, but some Hindu sects revel in it most. It is believed that the gods carry you safely across, and only those lacking faith would get burned.
