The craziest stories on football always seem to come out of the South American peninsula, where the passion for the game is the strongest, but hot tempers mean things often boil over.
A player shot a referee three times, right on the pitch, during an amateur football game in Argentina. He also shot a fellow player, and then bolted after the incident.
The referee had showed the player a red card, which it seems, had not gone down so well with him. He went to his backpack, retrieved a gun, and then came back onto the pitch to shoot the referee three times, and another player- 25 year old Walter Zarate.
Zarate was rushed to hospital, and is said to be recovering. The referee unfortunately died, having taken a bullet each in the head, chest and neck.
“It all happened during the match,” A police spokesman told the Efe news agency. “We don’t know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him.”
The killer is on the run, with police having launched a massive manhunt.
