This is unbelievable. Irate clashes, burnt places of worship, dead people- all for a place to put the dead. Nobody realises the irony?
The Muslim community and traditional authorities in Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region are currently embroiled in a bitter dispute over ownership of a cemetery in the area. Apparently, the Muslims are attempting to build a fence around the cemetery as they claim its theirs, but authorities are resisting, and this has led to numerous clashes in the community.
On Wednesday, clashes led to the burning of numerous vehicles, homes, and places of business by the irate combatants. One person was reportedly shot dead by police in the clashes, and a dusk to dawn curfew was imposed on the town to control the situation.
However, the situation has escalated Thursday morning, as clashes have renewed, this time targeting places of worship. According to Starr, about six churches and a mosque have been burnt to the ground in the township. It’s unclear when this madness is going to subside, although the police continue to tackle the situation as best as they can.
Three people have been declared wanted for their roles in the conflict, whilst one person is in police custody. One person seems a little underwhelming for all this carnage, no?
