Businessman Donald Trump got back to form with a commanding win in the US Republican Presidential candidates race in New Hampshire.
Trump’s campaign hit a roadblock last week, when he unexpectedly lost the Iowa caucuses to Texas Senator Ted Cruz– but he hit right back with a big win in the New Hampshire primary held Tuesday night, picking up 35% of the vote and outstripping his nearest competitor, Ohio Governor John Kasich, who picked up 16%- by 19% points.
Iowa winner Ted Cruz placed third with 12%, followed by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush with 11%, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, also with 11%, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie with 8%.
Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson and Rand Paul follow- in that order. About 92% of the total votes cast have been collated so far.
In the corresponding Democratic vote, Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders annihilated former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, picking up 60% of the votes to Clinton’s 38%.
This follows from their fierce contest in Iowa last week, which finished in a virtual dead heat as Clinton won by 0.2%. Sanders, a self described ‘Democratic Socialist’, is electrifying the populace with his message of fighting for the people against the elite class who dominate everything and makes everyone else’s life miserable. This message has propelled a once derided candidate into a credible alternative, leaving Hilary once again with a fight on her hands for a candidacy that was all but assured ten months ago.
The race is expected to get easier for Hilary in the upcoming primaries in Nevada, South Carolina and further Southern states, where a more diverse population complicates the matrices for Sanders, and where she enjoys tremendous support amongst African Americans and Hispanics. Senator Sanders’ ability to garner the same enthusiasm for his campaign amongst these minorities would be crucial in determining whether Hilary has another Barack Obama situation on hand.
The contest now moves onto the Nevada caucuses for Democrats on February 20, whilst Republicans contest the South Carolina primaries on the same date.
