Deadly Earthquake Hits Taiwanese City Of Tainan- At Least Seven Dead- Including One Baby

A 6.4 magnitude quake hit the Taiwanese city of Tainan in the early hours of Saturday (2000 GMT Friday) that collapsed buildings and led to several deaths.
At least seven people are believed to have died, including a ten day old baby, the BBC has reported. More than 300 people are also believed to be injured, with others also trapped in the rubble of buildings as rescue efforts continue.
Most of the deaths occurred in a 17 story apartment building, which had been described as high risk, and where rescue efforts are most concentrated. Reuters reports that “its floors… pancaked down on each other when the 6.4 magnitude tremor hit”
“Buildings in nine other locations in the city of 2 million people had collapsed and five were left tilting at alarming angles.” The news agency further reported.
The apartment building might have been unusually crowded, as lots of people had gathered for the celebration of Chinese New Year.
Rescue efforts continue for the trapped.
