Three Photos From The Black Star Square Proving Why Ghana Is Still Stuck In The 1st Century AD And Why We Have No Future

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (KJV) “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted”
For people who harp on and on and on about being Christians, Ghanaians know very little about the bible. Sure we know a verse here and a verse there, but beyond that we know very little of the etymology of the bible as a work of literature.
And even when we do know of a verse with a very clear instruction, like the one opening this piece- we do very little to actually practice what it says. Jesus screamed about giving to Caesar what is his, but again, that’s another place where we’re hearing the words, but we’re not actually processing them.
Pastor Chris Oyakhilome is in the country to hold a crusade or rally or whatever they’re calling it, dubbed ‘Night of Bliss’. It has been advertised nonstop for months, and today is the d-day, when the program is scheduled to take place from 1800.
I have no qualms with people deciding to worship their god, knock yourself out. Go to church every single day of the week if you like, as many other people already do. The problem is overdoing it, as we do, and which then affects not only yourself, but the country at large.
Oyakhilome’s visit and the program to be held at the Black Star square is a classic case in point. Chris has been treated like a rock star ever since he arrived, with people fawning over him on social media as if his is the return of Christ himself. That illustrates clearly the cult of personality built around this man , a trend that is clearly dangerous, in that the leader can do no wrong in the eyes of his followers; one reason why his wife was abused by many people online when she initiated divorce proceedings.

But the bigger problem is the fact people have been sitting at the Black Star Square since morning, for a program that is supposed to start at six, and probably would actually start around 9, seeing as how it is an all night service. These people have presumably skipped work or school to sit in the sun all day, to wait for the leader of their cult.
Therein lies the problem with the Ghanaian mentality. A full working day has been forfeited to go wait for a preacher who is nothing out of the ordinary. Why would anyone think it is a good idea to wait half a day for a crusade and let go of a full working day? Or we never heard of Ecclesiastes 3, or Jesus calling for you to give to Caesar what belongs to him? Productive, goal oriented citizens would never have even had the thought of forfeiting work to waste hours in such a frivolous manner.
We are blinded by allegiance to an ideology borne out of the gruesome death of ‘a saviour’ to appease himself- to the point that we use it as a crutch to enhance our stupidity. If the truth of the Christ myth is so self-evident, why does it have to be forced upon a group of people before they come to that truth. Can God not just appear to people without sending missionaries in whose wake slavery and colonialism would be spread? I’m yet to hear of the society who came to the story of Jesus on their own without it being forced down their throat!
Yet on the back of this we have become so convinced, and are still shackled to the mental part of the subjugation that was once inflicted upon us by force- made worse by the Pastor Chrises of this world who now use it as their own tool of exploitation.
Make no mistake, he would leave Ghana with a huge jackpot from this program, return to Nigeria, and wait for the next big rally. Ghanaians would go back to their workplaces or schools on Monday, wallowing in the same problems John Mahama and our own gullibility and shortsightedness have bequeathed us. Nothing would have changed, except for the fact that many people’s accounts would be a few cedis short, and Pastor Chris’ filled with, possibly, millions more.

Know your priorities; that is the import of Ecclesiastes 3:1 and Matthew 22:21. Christians shout so much about the bible that it rankles a lot when they fail to follow even its most basic commands.
Worse, a huge chunk of those domiciled at the Black Star Square are young people, the supposed ‘future’ of this country. If this is the future we have, a bunch of people stuck within first century mythology and without any recognition for true priorities- that’s not much of a future to write home about.
