A rare but not too rare occurrence is in lotteries are when winnings go unclaimed. Although humans are generally pretty fast when it comes to money issues, it still happens sometimes.
In California, a $63m jackpot has eluded all winners, as the deadline for submitting the winning ticket passed on February 4, without anybody coming forward with a verified claim.
Some people submitted claims for the prize, but none has been verified yet, and the lottery board is still processing them.
Brandon Miller , one claimant from California, filed a lawsuit after his claim was rejected. He said he received a letter announcing him as the winner, but then got a second one claiming his ticket was too damaged to be processed. He wants the court to award him the jackpot.
If unclaimed, the prize money would be awarded to schools in California.
