This has long been a staple of Ghanaian sports, which is heavily mixed with occult practices- that you injure a competitor through the dark arts so that you get to take his place.
We call it ‘tukpe’ or something like that. Those who believe in God also believe this works because all supernatural voodoo is the same to them, but many others laugh it off as childish games.
Anyway, as most Ghanaians believe in it I think this can be classified as a huge scandal in the making. A Western Region based spiritualist, Malam Isaka Salia, claims Ghana defender Rashid Sumaila caused the injury that ruled out teammate Jerry Akaminko from the world cup through the use of his services.
The mallam is pissed and his revealing the news because Sumaila, who now plays in the Middle East, has failed to settle his end of the bargain.
“He came to me for assistance ahead of the World Cup and I promised to help him,” Malam Isaka told Takoradi-based Kyzz FM.
“I told him he could only get a position in the squad if one of the centre-backs is injured. He accepted and asked me to do it to Jerry Akaminko. So I made sure Akaminko was injured so that Rashid’s name will be in the squad. I am now saying this public because he has failed to pay me,” he continued.
The mallam has thus given the defender a week’s ultimatum, or he’ll reveal hard evidence such as text messages the two exchanged.
Akaminoko picked up a severe injury in the build up to the 2014 world cup, one which took a long time for him to recover from, with Sumaila subsequently making the squad for the tournament, although he did not appear in any of Ghana’s three group games.
