Black Stars defender Rashid Sumaila has responded furiously to allegations that he hired the services of a Mallam to take out fellow player Jerry Akaminko ahead of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.
Sumaila made the final squad for the tournament ahead of Akaminko, after the former Heart of Lions defender sustained a career threatening injury in the last friendly before the tournament.
Allegations has since surfaced that Sumaila hired a mallam to carry out the deed, and failed to pay the man; but an infuriated Sumaila denied the allegations in an interview with Ghanasoccernet.com.
According to the defender, he is a staunch Muslim who does not engage in such activities. He also claims the Mallam is just using the allegations as a publicity stunt to gain more customers.
“I am a staunch Muslim and I don’t engage in that. I am shocked because I don’t know what he is talking about,” he said.
“How would I even want to do that when we were only four defenders in the team? I believe in my prayer as my weapon and I pray five times a day. So what at all will I be seeking from a spiritualist?.
“Wallahi I don’t even know him. I just heard the news this morning and I was shocked.
“I have never been to any spiritualist in my entire career before so he should come again.
“This man only wants attention and is trying to pitch me and Jerry at each other. But Allah will punish him.”
As we reported earlier, A Western Region based spiritualist, Malam Isaka Salia, claims Ghana defender Rashid Sumaila caused the injury that ruled out teammate Jerry Akaminko from the world cup through the use of his services.
The mallam is pissed and his revealing the news because Sumaila, who now plays in the Middle East, has failed to settle his end of the bargain.
“He came to me for assistance ahead of the World Cup and I promised to help him,” Malam Isaka told Takoradi-based Kyzz FM.
“I told him he could only get a position in the squad if one of the centre-backs is injured. He accepted and asked me to do it to Jerry Akaminko. So I made sure Akaminko was injured so that Rashid’s name will be in the squad. I am now saying this public because he has failed to pay me,” he continued.
The mallam has thus given the defender a week’s ultimatum, or he’ll reveal hard evidence such as text messages the two exchanged. Game on!
