British-American model Sam Sarpong committed suicide in October last year, jumping off a bridge in Pasadena, California.
His death was a shock to most, considering his popular stature and having not been noticed as suicidal or depressed- his family were just as shocked as everyone else that he would take his life.
Appearing on Loose Women (a British tv show she co-hosts), his sister June Sarpong could not hold back the tears when talking about her late brother.
“The pain doesn’t go away. It’s horrible, I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.” she said.
“It’s been such a tough time for my family and I. 2015 was the worst year of our lives – nobody could ever have predicted this.
“I have experienced emotions which I did not even know were humanely possible.”
June continued to discuss the obviously painful subject, continuing that nobody had any idea what was coming, in regards to his suicide. There was literally no sign of it.
“We were shell shocked because there were no signs. There was nothing that could lead anybody to believe that this was even possible.
“He wasn’t on medication, he doesn’t even drink… It was a moment of mad, Something just went off and he lost complete control over his mind” she continued.
“So the Sammy that we knew was not that boy on the bridge, the person that jumped off the bridge was not the man that we had loved for over 40 years.”
June then called on those who might have suicidal thoughts to seek help and not give in to them.
“For anybody even considering it, even having those thoughts, I beg you on behalf of the people you love, on behalf of your family, your family, the teacher whose favourite student you were, don’t do it.” she pleaded.
Sarpong, 40, was a co-host of MTV’s show Yo Momma, and had since gone on to serve as the host of the BET Awards pre-show All Access, for 7 years. At the 2013 BET Awards, Sarpong presented the “Best International Artist” category.
On October 26 last year, he tragically jumped to his death, despite a seven hour standoff with police who tried to talk him down from the bridge, eventually failing to do so.
