Power of the people- an online petition calling for the UK to ban Donald Trump from entering the country for spewing hate speech has garnered enough signatures to force MP’s to debate the issue.
The House of Commons would debate the issue on the 18th of January, although a vote would not be held after to determine whether the proposal should be implemented.
The Petitions Committee of the British Parliament announced the debate, in line with rules that state that any petition that garners over 100,000 signatures should be up for debate.
The Trump ban petition, started by Scotswoman Suzanne Kelly in response to Donald Trump’s absurd proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the United States as a response to terrorism- garnered around 568,000 supporters.
“By scheduling a debate … the Committee is not expressing a view on whether or not the government should exclude Donald Trump from the UK,” Reuters quotes petitions committee chairwoman Helen Jones as saying.
“As with any decision to schedule a petition for debate, it simply means that the committee has decided that the subject should be debated.
“A debate will allow a range of views to be expressed.”
