Ghanaian Lawyer Describes Parliament As Useless- Says They’re Just An Appendage Of Government

Scandals upon scandals upon scandals, that’s the only thing Ghanaians have to deal with these days. And if it isn’t a scandal, it’s a callous policy like the recent tax that has increased fuel prices.
One thing not hyped enough is that most of these deals go through Parliament to get approval. Thus for every government scandal, such as the bus branding, or even this recent case of fuel price increases- parliament had to approve it.
A Ghanaian constitutional law expert and Ivy League alumnus, Professor Henry Kwesi Prempeh, has pointed out this absurdity in the governmental structure of the country. According to him, Parliament is practically useless, as all they do is rubber stamp whatever the government brings to them.
“We don’t have a parliament; we have two branches of the executive, one for proposing laws and taxes and loans; the other for dutifully approving them,” he wrote, in a post on social media.
Fuming further, he expressed outrage at Ketu North MP James Avedzi’s recent comments that if Ghanaians cannot afford fuel, they park their cars and pick trotros.
“The Chairman of the Finance committee of Parliament, siding with our tax-and-waste government instead of We the People, has told Ghanaians who think the tax-heavy price of petrol is unbearable to park their cars and walk or get on our non-existent London public transportation,”
He said further that Ghanaian’s tendency to vote along party lines rather than for competent people contributes to this apathy from those in power.
“He (James Avedzi) is sure to get re-elected; no wonder he has little incentive to use his position as MP to represent the interest and concerns of We the People, rather than of the government”. he added.
