The latest outbreak of the Ebola virus in Guinea has finally ended.
Guinea, the last stand for the battle after eradication in Liberia and Sierra Leone, has also been declared Ebola free.
A country can be declared free of the virus 42 days after the last negative test, twice the incubation period of Ebola. Guinea was declared free by the World Health Organisation on December 29, at a ceremony held in the capital Conakry.
Sierra Leone regressed despite being declared Ebola free once, when a new infection was detected, with the same happening in Liberia since their last declaration- so the announcement is being treated with skepticism.
The WHO says 90 days of heightened surveillance would continue to determine the virus is truly gone.
The Ebola outbreak, centred mainly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, is the worst in history, having claimed over 11,000 lives.
