If you want to talk about an underutilised portion of our industry, this is it.
Biopics are a big deal in the US and other parts of the world with developed entertainment industries. There’s nothing like telling the hyperbolic stories of how our cult heroes overcame all adversity to get to the stage they are now.
Straight Outta Compton, the biopic of pioneering rap group N.W.A (Niggaz With Attitude) is one of the biggest movies of the year. VVIP might make a comparable splash in our market, seeing how influential and iconic they are in our hiplife history.
And according to Reggie Rockstone, that’s exactly what they are aiming at. The hiplife grandpapa says Compton has given them the inspiration of thinking ahead to do the same with their group, tell their story.
“We were speaking about the hiphop movie, ‘Straight Out of Compton’ definitely inspiring us,” Reggie said, speaking to Citi Fm.
“VIP definitely has a story to tell; that whole Nima community and the stories and the sub stories, then you extend it to my story and the story of me joining them; it will be a good movie. Everyone is going to be in there, everything that got the media lit is going to be in there.”
Promzy’s exit and Rggie’s insertion should prove challenging in how they would decide to portray it- but all should be fine so long as they don’t downplay the importance of their old buddy; and show exactly the relative lack of importance of Reggie to the VIP brand that reigned for so long.
