Meadowlark Lemon, one of the most iconic players ever of the exhibitionist basketball team ‘The Harlem Globetrotters’, has died at age 83.
Lemon passed away on Sunday, December 27, in Scotsdale, Arizona; his wife Cynthia Lemon confirmed to the New York Times. No cause of death has yet been released.
Lemon played for the Globetrotters for 22 years, joining them in 1954 at the age of 22. He went on to have an illustrious career with the famous team, his extraordinary antics earning him the nickname the ‘Clown Prince of Basketball’
Lemon appeared in over 16,000 games for the Globetrotters, playing for them in 98 countries. He formed his own exhibition basketball teams after leaving the Harlem based side in 1978, and scored several appearances in television due to his immense popularity- including appearances on ‘Scooby Doo’ and the 1970’s NBC Comedy Series, ‘Hello Larry’.
