The utility of music to human endeavours is one that can never be overstated. Even before the highly digitalised era of music today, replete with enough instruments that fine tune and even alter the music being churned out by the singer- humans have found ways to give voice to their inner sense of wonder.

Aside being a means of entertainment, music has also served several other purposes, such as serving as a means of communication. Over time, several genres and forms of music have developed, serving different groups of people during different periods of history.

In the Ghanaian context, music played a huge role in traditional society. Before the advent of the colonial era, which its resultant arrival of missionaries- cultural music formed a huge part of social life- with drumming and dancing being the main forms of artistic expression.

With the arrival of the aforementioned missionaries and the establishment of missionary churches like the Methodist and Presbyterian churches, singing of hymnals in churches also got introduced into Ghanaian society. Over time, the practice seeped into other institutions, but the existence of a choir has always been the preserve of the church.

In recent times, the newest bug that has struck Ghanaian society is the establishment of youth choirs. Often originating from churches but not exclusive to them, the prevalence of youth choirs give a voice and an identity to localities, and often the exploits of these groups carries with it a certain pride.

And with the proliferation of so many youth choirs, a certain level of competition has been brewing under the surface for a while. There is often huge debate over the best one in the country, even though only a couple can really hold themselves up to that claim.

And the level of quality amongst them is not up for debate, at least amongst the top echelons. The Winneba and Dansoman Youth Choirs have reputations that transcend this country, and have even to some extent carved out a certain sound for themselves, which one can recognise just by hearing them belting out their craft. No event of significance in this country is completed without a choral rendition.

So with this new phenomenon sweeping the country, which aside creating healthy competition gives a sense of purpose to many young people across the country, GhanaCelebrities.com has decided to investigate the localities in the country that has strong and vibrant youth choirs.
