Dansoman

Dansoman is another of the plush suburbs of Accra, famous for having West Africa’s largest estate. Dansoman is a true cosmopolitan mix, containing everything that makes Accra fun.

It has a large religious scene informed by the presence of virtually every prominent Christian denomination, juxtaposed with a crazy night life due to the abundance of spots, bars, and nightclubs. These can range from the high end, expensive places patronised by stars and celebrities, to others tailor-fitted for the average Ghanaian.

Ghanaians often take an inordinate amount of pride in their localities, but Dansoman’s residents surely take this to an entirely new level, in their never ending rivalry with Tema. They have smugly rechristened their town DC (short for Dansoman City), and are eternally locked with the harbour city residents in a non-battle to determine who houses the biggest number of celebrities.

Located in the Ablekuma West constituency, DC’s numerous hangouts include Danstardom and Kit Kat, and the Seven Great Princes Academy is just one of several notable landmarks. Dansoman residents can name better than myself the myriad of stars that populate the vicinity.

With such colossal local pride, the exploits of the Dansoman Youth Choir provides another avenue for any resident to walk with their heads held high. Over the past five years the choir has become one of the best in the country, appearing at several local and international events and wowing everyone everywhere they go.

Started by Ebenezer Edem Beble in 2006, the choir’s soaring reputation has attracted members from far and wide, especially from surrounding localities. And despite its relatively recent origins, it has overtaken several more established ones to become one of, if not the best- youth choir on the local scene.
