Abelemkpe

Abelemkpe is one of the more deluxe areas in a capital that in many instances fails to live up to its reputation. A plush residence in the eastern part of the capital, it lies conveniently close to major hubs such as Achimota and the Accra Mall.

Like most plush parts of Ghana, the high class do not have a monopoly over the town. Old Abelemkpe contains more typical Ghanaian residences, with compound houses housing several families.

A neighbourhood with several traditional churches as well as more modern, charismatic ones, the presence of choirs in the town is not a rarity; but the Harmonious Chorale stands head and shoulders above them all. The group evolved from the erstwhile Harmonious Quartet, and has since grown into one of the most well known in the country.

The group is chaired by Dr Joyce Aryee, former chairman of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Founder of the Salt and Light Ministries. Its executive director is James Varrick Armaah, a choral music veteran and one of the members of the original Harmonious quartet.
