Sakumono
Our final spot on the list goes to Sakumono- the binary coastal town marooned between the uber popular Spintex road and the port city of Tema. Sakumono is not a heavyweight like several of the places on this list, but has done its best to give rise to a youth choir that earns it a spot on this list amongst some of the more well known towns when it comes to the history of Ghana.
Sakumono has two parts which forms the same town but which live in completely different worlds from each other. The Sakumono village is a coastal fishing town made up almost exclusively of Ga indigenes. The town is less structured, but with an urban feel that belies its description as a village.

The Sakumono estate, though, is very similar to estates across the country and is well planned, but more isolated. The estate and township were both constructed by Ghana’s first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah, to provide accommodation for workers, around the same time the industrial township of Tema was developing next door.
The Sakumono Youth Choir was founded in 2011 by Isaac Ankamah Okyere. Like all other youth choirs, it is an interdenominational choir plucking up all the best young talents in the area, to try to affect change through song.
CONCLUSION
We come to the end of what we hope has been a rewarding and educational journey. What do you make of the list? Remember this was not to list the best youth choirs in Ghana (although many of them appear), but the localities with a top youth choir. Did we get it right? Did we represent your town well enough, or you have gripes with our description? Sound off below.
This is the first in a series of articles to cover Ghana’s Youth Choir scene. If you run a choir and are interested in appearing on the next list of top ten youth choirs in Ghana, you can send an email to godwin@ghanacelebrity.com complete with history and accomplishments- making the case for cracking that top ten.
