We all know this is a sore issue for Ghanaians to consider, the subject of gay rights. But our inability to comprehend some of these issues is really for a lack of trying.

As a society, we punish people for what they become, or for engaging in behaviours that hurt others. We do not punish people for what they are, or for engaging in behaviour hurting no one else in society.

The Deputy Head of Mission at the Netherlands Mission in Ghana, has called on Ghanaians to embrace universal human rights for all, including gay people. According to her, human rights is a principle which should not be discarded based solely on a person’s race or s*xual orientation.

“We promote in general human rights which is an integral part of our foreign policy and dialogue is the best way to go about it. We talk with governments, private sectors, youth, associations and we talk about all kinds of things – women and children and child protection among others,” she told Starr News.

She added: “It takes time, but I think change from society comes from within. It’s about universality of human rights without any regard for race or sexual orientation.

“For Netherlands the main initiative came from the communities and everyone is seen as equal and has the same right as everybody else.” She told Starr Fm.

The Netherlands is one of the most liberal nations in the world, a country where weed is legal and you can even find churches dedicated to its worship.
