Several Ghanaian footballers were miracle babies—it’s either they look far older than the age they put out there or their own parents do not even know their real age. And the latest is, when it comes to football, a person can be called Kwadwo and still be born on Friday.
From a Facebook tip off, GhanaCelebrities.Com decided to check what the public records hold as the date of birth of Ghanaian footballer-Kwadwo Asamoah. We found that, his date of birth is recorded as December 9, 1988 by all including the UEFA.
But there’s a problem—this day is a FRIDAY, which means he should rather be called Kofi if indeed he was born on that day per Ghana’s Akan naming tradition.
In Ghana, a person born on Friday is called Kofi (if a boy and Afia if a girl). For someone to be called Kwadwo, he must have been born on Monday. And that’s why we are confused.
Things can really get interesting with these footballers; and perhaps, we better stop looking into their affairs or else we won’t get anyone to play for the National team again.
Probably there is an interesting explanation for this—such as he was named after someone born on Monday.
Recently, the father of Baffour Gyan (who is a senior brother of Asamoah Gyan) stated on radio that his son-Baffour Gyan is 36 years old when his football records said he is 35.
I was born on Saturday but am called Kojo….Named after my grandfather
9 December 1985 is a Monday; just saying
The article talks about the year 1988,so you talking about 1985 hasn’t got any relevance to this story.
I guess you did not get the joke. 1985 9 December falls on Monday so all I was saying is, he could have been born in 1985 but for football age, he just reduced his age by 3
He’s probably named after a certain kojo asamoah. You know some people do that in Ghana right.
Kwame Nkrumah is a perfect example.
GC for this one you no try at all…do you know that many Ghanaians are named after their grandparents…this is irrespective of the day of the day of the week of birth. Someone can be born on a Tuesday and still be named Yaa because of the person she is named after. Not everyone is controversial
