Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas recently stirred trouble in the judiciary, after the release of his undercover investigation into the institution revealed massive rot.
22 lower court and 12 High Court judges were implicated in the scandal, and after the work of a committee set up to investigate the charges, twenty of the lower court judges have been sacked.
Two judges received their end of service benefits, ostensibly for showing remorse at their appearance before the disciplinary committee. The rest were sacked without benefits.
The twenty two judges were suspended in the immediate aftermath of the scandal, to allow the committee set up by the Chief Justice to carry out their investigations.
“A Disciplinary Committee of the Judicial Council was constituted to investigate the petition against the 22 judges and magistrates. It is a five-member Committee chaired by a justice of the Supreme Court.” A judicial council statement released at the time said.
This sacking is the outcome of the work of that committee, which was presented to the public at a press conference Monday night.
The investigation into the high court judges continues, after seven of them were also suspended with the establishment of a prima facie case against them. They aren’t taking theirs as passively- some of them have fled, whilst several others continue to challenge the process in court.
