The Fifa World Cup has always been an exclusive, big boy’s event, where the rest of the world was gradually allowed to crash in and pretend to compete with the big boys- Europe and South America.
Africa and Asia are the world’s biggest continents in terms of land mass and population, yet have five and four and a half places respectively. Europe, one of the smallest continents, has 14 of the 32 slots.
Therefore, reforms to increasing the number of teams, and thus increasing the participation of these continents, are generally well received. And Fifa executive members discussed the idea of increasing the number of world cup teams from 32 to 40 at a meeting in Geneva on Thursday.
The meeting was to discuss a very comprehensive reform package for the organisation that is currently plunged in a corruption scandal.
The plan has been sent back to the Fifa administration for further research, but if approved would likely take effect from the 2026 world cup.
