The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Music Awards just came to an end down under, and comedian Matt Okine picked up the award for Best Comedy release.

30 year old Matt is the son of Mack Okine, a Ghanaian, and his Australian mother Roslyn, who died from breast cancer early in his life. He has carved a niche for himself in Australian comedy, co-hosting the breakfast show on Triple J with Alex Dyson.

His comedy special, ‘Live at the Enmore Theatre’, won him rave reviews and has now given him an ARIA award.

Okine used his acceptance speech to hit out at sexism in the industry, wondering aloud why there were no women in the comedy category.

“I didn’t feel great reading that list of people,” he told the audience at the ceremony, held at Sydney Star casino.

The night belonged to rock band Tame Impala, who picked up three awards including ‘album of the year’ and ‘best group’. One Direction won the Best International Artiste, whilst 5 Seconds of Summer picked up the ‘Best Australian Live Act’ accolade.
