Marshall Bruce Mathers III (or Eminem), had a rough journey to where he is today. As a white man in a mainly black game, things were far from smooth coming up.
One of the ways he himself from the crowd was with phenomenal rap battle skills. That was immortalised in the 2002 movie 8 Mile, the semi autobiographical story of the ‘Rap God’
50 Cent is one of the people Eminem brought up after he had become a success himself; and the rapper talks about his mentor in a new interview.
According to 50, Eminem is one of the greatest battle rap artists he has ever seen. He mentioned his unusual knack of saying every bad thing about himself he thought his opponent could use, which usually left them without any ammunition.
“From early days, he was this great battle artist. The guys who were up against him would think of everything you could say about him, then he’d say those things about himself first.
“So everything they had against him, he took it away. He was writing all this personal stuff.”
50 Cent was always amazed by that, because he never went into music to be personal, just for the money.
“I was never anything like that. I came into music with songwriting intentions ‘cause that’s where the money was.”
(If you haven’t) You really should see that skill of Eminem in action, in the closing stages of 8 Mile.
