The auctioneers world is a strange one, as rich guys bid to buy the ‘rarest’ of items. Maybe one can only appreciate a collector’s joy when one has boatloads of money to, you know- collect.
An auction of Titanic memorabilia held recently saw some items off the legendary ship selling off for impressive amounts.
A cup, which was presented to the captain of the SS Carpathia (the ship that rescued the Titanic survivors) by one of the survivors, got auctioned off at $200,000. Pre-sale, it had been pegged at a value of between $60,000 and $92,000.
Another item off the ship auctioned was a biscuit that sold for $23,000. The biscuit was part of a survival kit on a Titanic lifeboat, and was found by James Fenwick, a passenger aboard the Carpathia.
“It is incredible that this biscuit has survived such a dramatic event — the sinking of the world’s largest ocean liner — costing 1,500 lives,” auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said.
A photo of the iceberg that sank the Titanic also sold for $32,000.
The RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912. The disaster led to the death of over 1,500 passengers and crew.
