Power Barge Christened ‘Aysegul Sultan’ Sets Sail For Ghana

The ‘Aysegul Sultan’

Almost a year after it was first promised, Ghanaians are set to feel the effects of this legendary power ship, when it starts contributing to the national grid at the end of November.

Or so we’re being told.

After an elaborate commissioning ceremony in Turkey on Tuesday, the ship set sail for Ghana from the Sedef Shipyard in Tuzia. It is expected to dock on the shores of Tema in approximately fifteen days.

The ship was named after the sister of the Chairman of Karadeniz Holding, christened ‘Aysegul Sultan’. Karadeniz is the parent company of Karadeniz Energy group, of which Karpowership Ghana Company Limited is a subsidiary.

The floating power station will add 240MW of power to the national grid, that is 15 MW more than originally planned. A second ship is under construction, expected in Ghana by the second half of 2016.
