Gas Supply To Ghana Could Be Halted Because Of $180m Debt

President Mahama

The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPco) has threatened to cut gas supply to Ghana by Friday if a $180m debt owed it by the Volta Regional Authority (VRA) is not settled.

The action by the company could cripple the power situation again, which has shown signs of improvement in recent times.

At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, the Managing Director of WAPCo Walter Perez, said the company is obligated to cease the supply to Ghana if payments are not made.

“WAPCo is contractually obligated to curtail deliveries to VRA as of zero hours on Friday.

“We find it unfortunate that the VRA debt situation has been allowed to deteriorate to the point where it now jeopardizes WAPCo’s very existence as a company,” Mr. Perez said.

The official added that the President has been attempting to mediate the impasse, but that the payment of at least a part of the debt is the only viable solution.

I don’t know how this debt can be allowed to accumulate this much, especially when the gas is such a big part of plants that help ease the power situation.

Just another example of screwed up priorities in Ghana.
