Government Reacts To Social Media Insulting Of President John Mahama By Ghanaians

The Government of Ghana has slammed the ‘negative comments’ and ‘vitriolic’ attacks on the president on the Facebook page of Hollywood star Boris Kodjoe.

The Facebook page of Boris Kodjoe was trolled with avalanche of abusive comments after he shared a photo of himself with the President of Ghana John Mahama, commending him for his efforts in helping end child marriages in Ghana. “Meeting with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. Great man who sees tremendous value in the empowerment of girls and pushes hard to end child marriages in Ghana. ‘When you educate a woman you are effectively helping the community…’#‎EmpowerGhanasGirls‬,” said the ‘Love & Basketball’ actor.

Reacting to the abusive comments via a press release signed by the communication minister, Edward Omane Boamah, the Government said they find it “unacceptable for any section of the Ghanaian community to openly ridicule the President of the Republic on such an international platform” because it brings the “high office of the Presidency into disrepute, and needlessly embarrass the nation.”

“No country is perfect and no leader is flawless but this should not provide justification for citizens to wash the dirty linen of the nation in public,” they added.

The statement further advised Ghanaians to stop posting abusive comment on social media. “The Government, by this statement calls on all Ghanaians, home or abroad, to immediately desist from posting such comments, and as much as possible, delete such comments if they have already been posted.”

Government finds unfortunate the vitriolic, negative comments being put up on the Facebook page of renowned Ghanaian born Hollywood star, Boris Kodjoe, in response to a picture post made by the star in which he commends His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, for his good work, particularly for young women.

It is unacceptable for any section of the Ghanaian community to openly ridicule the President of the Republic on such an international platform. Such comments and acts brings the high office of the Presidency into disrepute, and needlessly embarrass the nation. No country is perfect and no leader is flawless but this should not provide justification for citizens to wash the dirty linen of the nation in public.

The Government, by this statement calls on all Ghanaians, home or abroad, to immediately desist from posting such comments, and as much as possible, delete such comments if they have already been posted.
