They call it the nation’s Wembley, the national stadium. Yet looking at how it’s run, you wouldn’t know that. You would think it’s some backward stadium in some backward town, and nowhere near the nation’s capital.
Maintenance on the edifice is not run, nothing is done to keep it in shape. And now the latest challenge is in regards to power.
According to reports, the Ohene Djan sports stadium has been plunged into darkness because management of the stadium owes the Electricity Company of Ghana in excess of Ghc 240,000 ($60,000).
Eric Nkansah Gyamenah, of the National Sports Council, who run the stadium, explained to Starrfmonline what caused the problem.
“From 2014 till now we owe over GHC 240,000 and the Electricity Company is demanding that at least half of the amount is paid for the light to be restored.
“We can’t afford to pay this amount through internally generated funds since government subventions are not enough, but we hope to overcome this predicament soon if private entities come and hire the place for events,”
A freaking disgrace, is what this is. And this is just one out of the myriad of government institutions that owe ECG huge sums nationwide. It’s no wonder the company is collapsing.
