Nicholas Omane Acheampong has slammed fellow gospel musicians for their lack of originality. The Tabitha Kum singer lashed out at the current breeds of gospel singer for being too lazy to write their own music.
“Most of our Gospel musicians are doing great, but the majority of them are being lazy,” he dished out his thoughts on eTV’s Late Nite Celebrity Show.
“I don’t want to sound controversial, but I don’t consider most of them as musicians simply because they haven’t got what it takes to be musicians.”
Mr Acheampong added that these musicians only resort to sampling decades old songs because they are talentless. He said: “You need to acquire certain things before you qualify as a musician. They call themselves musicians but sing the songs their grandparents were singing in the past as their current albums. Some of them do songs that they wrote themselves and some also sample already existing songs and give it a new life.
“If you keep singing the songs that everyone already knows, I want to know who owns the song. At a point, it gets confusing because these famous hymns they sing can be sung by another artist.”
I think Mr Acheampong has got it all wrong. There is nothing wrong with sampling songs especially when you credit the owner. More than half of Kanye West discography are sampled songs from the 80s. Also, there is no wrong in covering someone’s song when you ask permission from the owner. Whitney Houston’s rendition of ‘I Will Always Love You’ is critically acclaimed worldwide and widely considered better than the original, which was recorded by Dolly Parton in 1974.
Waaaa look , discussing about gospel music and just brought in Kanye West and Dolly Parton. It’s never the same. He’s talking about being creative in this new era of gospel musicians
