The Black Queens have not been paid their bonuses by government for the past three years, and have been fighting government for their monies since their return from their triumphant campaign at the All Africa Games.
Government can fly money to the Black Stars when they’re owed one match’s allowance, but three years can pass without the ladies who earn considerably less, being given what they’re due.
Can you imagine this pampered Black Stars millionaires playing when they’re owed even one year’s worth of allowances? Yet these ladies have kept representing their country, and they even managed to win gold at the recent All Africa Games, despite figuratively playing on empty stomachs.
Since the tournament ended and they returned to Ghana, they have been camped at the M-Plaza hotel in Accra. They refuse to budge until they’re given what they’re owed. I would encourage them to stay there till eternity if that’s what it would take, especially as government is footing the bill for the hotel.
Interestingly, the sports minister tells Joy Sports the ministry does not have money to pay the ladies. The Ministry which flew cash out of this country a little more than three weeks ago?
The irony is that the Queens actually win stuff. The disproportion in the treatment meted to the national teams is really appalling and should generate outrage. The bonuses these ladies would earn would not even amount to a tenth of the filthy sums we give the Stars, and yet we claim we cannot find monies to pay them.
They say a nation that does not honour its heroes…
