A stampede that occurred on Thursday during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage led to the death of over 700 and injured more than 800.
So far, no Ghanaian has been reported amongst the deceased, but news of five pilgrims gone missing has sparked fears that they could be dead.
According to Graphic Online, the five, including a Hajj agent, have gone missing from the Ghana camp in Mina following the stampede and a frantic search has been initiated for them.
It is unclear what exactly their status is at this moment; as to whether they are merely missing or died in the stampede. But the search has proved fruitless so far.
A total of 5,309 Ghanaian Muslims are in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia performing this year’s pilgrimage, including the NPP’s Dr Bawumia.
In all, about two million Muslims from across the globe are performing the pilgrimage.
