I’m pretty sure you’ll recognise him, as he is often seen at world cup games holding a replica trophy. He has been supporting the Brazilian national team at every world cup for over two decades now.
Over time he became something of a sensation, so the cameras always pick him out at games.
Unfortunately, Clovis Acosta Fernandes passed away in Brazil today. According to reports he had been battling cancer for past nine years and finally succumbed.
Acosta was ever present at the last world cup in Brazil, and was unfortunate enough to witness his country trashed 7-1 by Germany on home soil. As you can imagine, he was inconsolable.
Also known as ‘Gaucho da Copa’, Fernandes had attended more than 150 of the Selecao’s matches in over 60 different countries and seven different World Cup finals.
May he rest in peace.
