A South African boxer unfortunately passed away after suffering a first round knockout in a bout and being unable to recover from it.
Mzwanele Kompolo, described as a promising talent, collapsed after being knocked out by Siphenathi Qampi, reports the Associated Press.
Kompolo was rushed to the Frere Hospital in the Eastern Cape Province after his ring collapse, but he fell into a coma. South Africa’s sports ministry announced that he died Tuesday, September 15.
According to the AP report, South Africa’s sports ministry is still investigating the death of female boxer Phindile Mwelase late last year. Mwelase died after being in a coma for two weeks following a fight in the capital, Pretoria.
