A pair of conjoined twins, commonly referred to as Siamese twins, were separated by doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after an intense six hour operation.
Unfortunately after the surgery, only one of the twins survived.
The twins were born on July 3 at the Atibie Hospital in the Eastern Region, but had to be rushed to KATH for the separation surgery. The initial separation surgery was a success for the twins, who shared an intestine, a urinary bladder, and a bowel.
Being very fragile, several tests and special measures had to be taken to keep them alive. According to Daily Graphic, one of them died after nine days due to doctors having to move the twins to and fro every time a critical test had to be carried out due to the absence of all the necessary equipment in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
The mother and one of the twins survived.
