Being a black woman comes with inescapable difficulties—and for many centuries, black women have been marginalized by different regimes and interest groups.
It hurts when a person of a different colour sidelines black women but it goes beyond the pains of hurt when certain opportunities meant for our black sisters are thrown far away to white chicks by our own people…
I do not want to hear the global village argument here—because it does not hold water as to why a Ghanaian music video will completely fail to feature a single black woman, instead, it boldly parades several white ‘chicks.’
“Baba God”, the latest music video from the multiple award-winning Ghanaian artiste-Guru which was shot in Dubai has all ‘white chicks’ cast—and I don’t want to blame it on the shooting location because there are several beautiful young black women in Dubai.
Perhaps, it’s a mindset—and it has nothing to with the concept behind the video.
For a Ghanaian music video which is directed by a Ghanaian to cut off black vixens and throw in there several ridiculous ‘white chicks’—there must be a good reason for this. And I sort of think there is none, because, our people still have supreme affection for everything white and foreign…
What would have happened if a single dark skinned vixen was thrown in there? What is upsetting is not just the fact that there were no black women in the video; those ‘white chicks’ seem completely lost and less interested…
How much were they paid? We may never know—but what we know for sure is that, when it’s hard, these African artistes fall on their own but when their pockets get a little thick, they run to the other side even if inappropriate.
This is not the first and it will not be the last we see black/dark skinned women marginalised by black musicians for simple things as appearing in their music videos.
A few years ago, Akon and Wizkid made headlines when they reportedly sacked several dark skinned models from the set of a music video in Ghana—and requested the modelling agency in charge to rather ‘supply’ them with light skinned models.
The insult on the dark skinned models was aggravated by their subsequent request that, if these models knew of any light skinned young girls, they should kindly ‘supply’ their details or call them over…
If our black sisters are not even good to appear in our own black music videos—what the hell else do we think they are good for?
This is just a music video but it says a lot about our direction…
