7.  Inspector Bediako

Inspector Bediako, played by the fluent Oscar Provencal was Ghana’s version of CSI. The program begun airing in 1992 and was written by Odie Hawkins an African – American writer.  It starred seasoned stars like David Dontoh, Akosua Abdallah, Grace Nortey and a host of others.

Bediako’s major task was to unravel mysteries and solve crimes bedevilling his environment and beyond. He was aided by Akosua Abdallah (real name) and Sowah (character’s name) and together they were able to unmask some bad guys who were subsequently punished by the law.

The series was aired every Saturday and had a very catchy soundtrack that helped bolster its reputation. The show became very iconic and kids at the time, including myself yearned to be a detective in future.

 8. By The Fireside

This was a folkloric programme aimed at instilling moral values that reflects our culture into children. Additionally, the organizers of the show (the 31st December women’s movement) sought to reverse the ‘Cinderella’ and other foreign stories that have the popular phrase ‘and they lived happily ever after’ with a more relevant stories woven around the traditional loom.

Grace Omaboe and Emmanuel Boateng famously called Dr. Rokoto ensured our Saturdays were special as the antagonist George Kwaku and Ntikumah; often the protagonist (played by Ghetto K.B of blessed memory) and his family treated Ghanaian children with traditional form of entertainment, interspersed with music and dance.

9. Taxi Driver

Psalm Adjeteyfio became a household name with this program produced by Emmanuel Appea. It also featured Mikki Osie Berko, who played the wicked car owner, and Ghone’s finest; George Quaye, popularly called Aboagye.

Taxi driver portrays the funny and mishaps of a taxi driver called T.T and his good for nothing friends like Axterix and the ‘’grammarian’’ Papa Nii Papafio and some ‘difficult’ passengers who took us through a journey of pure laugher and potpourri of situations within the context of Ghanaian upper class family.

10.  Fun World

Many artistes like Tinny, Pozo, Yoggy Doggy just to mention a few will always label fun world as the turning point in their lives. This youth program that started over twenty years ago was a platform for unearthing and nurturing talents.

It’s in a form of edutainment. Children from different parts of the country converged at the National Theatre to treat patrons with their God given talents.

  1. Journey to the west is still shown on Chinese Televisions till this very date. It is considered the biggest TV program in China that was ever made.

  2. These Tv shows were also great for the youth bk then, but IDT it did so well with sponsorships hence them taking it off after a season or 2; L & G (Ladies & Gent) & Buddies I think. Oh Hotel st ajames & Home sweet home…those were very good too.
